Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of PT Honda Prospect Motor, Honda Continues Commitment to Indonesian Society
Karawang - PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), Honda’s automobile subsidiary in Indonesia, celebrated its 20th anniversary today in its Karawang factory, West Java. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Industry; Mr. Ahmad Zamakhsyari, Vice Regent of the Karawang Regional Government; Mr. Masafumi Ishii, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia; Mr. Masayuki Igarashi, Chief Officer for Regional Operations (Asia & Oceania) of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and President & CEO of Asian Honda Motor Co., Ltd.; and Mr. Takehiro Watanabe, President Director of PT Honda Prospect Motor. This historic event marks Honda’s continuous contribution to Indonesian society through investments and production activities.

 
Honda’s automobile business in Indonesia started 46 years ago in 1973, with the establishment of PT Prospect Motor as distributor of Honda’s car. In 1999, PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) was established as joint venture between Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and PT Prospect Motor. The company began automobile production in 2003 after the establishment of the first manufacturing plant in Karawang with Honda Freed as the first produced model.
 
In an effort to meet the increasing demand for Honda products in Indonesia, HPM established a second plant in 2012, substantially increasing its total annual production capacity from 30,000 units to 200,000 units. Currently, HPM is producing Honda CR-V, Honda HR-V and Honda Mobilio in its first plant while Honda Brio, Honda HR-V, Honda Jazz and also Honda Mobilio are being produced in the second plant.
 
Honda’s automobile components were first exported by PT Prospect Motor, Honda’s distributor, in 1992 to various countries namely Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. In 2009, after Honda and PT Prospect Motor formed PT Honda Prospect Motor, a joint venture company, HPM started its first Completely Built Up (CBU) export with Honda Freed to several countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. This year, HPM will start exporting the All-New Honda Brio to the Philippines and Vietnam. The first line-off for All-New Honda Brio export unit was held during HPM’s 20th anniversary event in Karawang factory.
 
 
In 2012, HPM introduced the first generation Honda Brio which was developed based on the needs of customers in Indonesia as well as Asia & Oceania region. The company introduced the second generation Honda Brio in 2018, featuring a new dynamic and sporty design, larger dimensions, and more spacious cabin and luggage space. The model was greatly accepted by customers in Indonesia with cumulative sales over 280,000 units and received 32 prestigious awards from various organizations including Automotive Journalist Forum, Autocar Readers Choice Award and OTOMOTIF Awards.
 
Mr. Masayuki Igarashi, Chief Officer for Regional Operations (Asia & Oceania) of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. & President and CEO of Asian Honda Motor Co., Ltd. said, "Indonesia is a very important market for Honda business and it has become the main contributor of our operation in the Asia and Oceania region. As a commitment to this market, we have increased our investment through development of facilities in Indonesia and model introduction to cater the need of Indonesian customers." He also added, "I would like to express my gratitude to all Honda customers for the full support during the past 20 years, and we will continue to deliver the "joy of expanding their life’s potential" with excellent products and services to Indonesian customers."
 
Meanwhile, Mr. Takehiro Watanabe, President Director of PT Honda Prospect Motor said, "For 20 years, HPM has been making continuous efforts to be a company that the Indonesian society wants to exist. Indonesia is one of the good example of Honda’s production policy, which is ‘Build the products where the demand exists’. We believe that our business in Indonesia will continue to bring positive contribution to the industry and society in this country.
